Okay God, I’m Almost Ready
Sometimes people are poopy.
Sometimes people are really poppy.
And sometimes they’re eat-Taco-Bell-four-days-in-a-row poopy.
This is the level of poopiness we’ve been dealing with lately.
And while I’m ready to go to a new level of crazy on them (picture Rambo and The Terminator’s love child); I feel as though God is telling me to do…nothing.
NOTHING?!?! Are you serious???? Did you see what just happened!!!??? Can’t I just…
No– God
But seriously, we can’t let them get away with this, why can’t I just…
No– God
Okay, okay, I see where you’re going with this but, if I could just…
No– God
Fine, I’ll stand down…
No, can’t do it, God you just have to let me…
NO!- God
Sigh, this is where I’m at currently. And it stinks. I really do feel in my spirit that I’m supposed to do nothing, and this is my least favorite reaction. Look, color me arrogant but I really feel like the Big Guy upstairs is under utilizing me. This is the prefect opportunity to tag me in!
A couple of posts ago, I wrote about the importance of not holding on to anger, that doing so causes bitterness- which causes all kinds of awfulness. But I wanted to take a moment to show you a practical way to let that anger go. This is vitally important when you’ve been benched and have to watch it play out without you. Seriously God, put me in!
So I’m actually stealing this from Tony Robbins and his book Awaken the Giant, it’s one of the books I’m currently reading right now and it’s blowing my mind a little bit. Anywho, in it Tony tells us that in order to get rid of the negative emotions we’re feeling about a situation, we need to interrupt those emotions. How you ask? Well, allow me to explain.
First, I want you to close you eyes. Stop, don’t do it now, wait until after you read the instructions. Okay, so you’ll close your eyes and then I want you to imagine the situation like you’re watching a movie. Try to remember all the details, and just watch it play out.
Now, I want you to replay the scene but this time I want you to change something to make it funny. Speed up the tempo, slow it way down, add funny music, give everyone clown makeup- the goal is to make it as ridiculous as you can. Now replay it 12 more times, each time letting it get sillier and sillier. I personally like to make everyone talk like William Shatner.
Shat out!
Oh, and by the way, I’m filing this lesson under 2 Cor 10:5- Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing in to captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. In layman’s term- control your thoughts bro!
Now I know that this exercise may sound a little silly; but isn’t losing sleep for a whole week while you stew over something equally silly? Give it a try, and keep trying it until you feel better. It’s sort of like deodorant, it will wear off if you don’t reapply. Because sometimes the best thing you can do is nothing. Or rather, the best thing you can do is simply to turn the other cheek.
And while you’re turning, don’t forget, you have two more cheeks on the backside.
